Jedi Fallen Order Will Be At Star Wars Celebration This April

EA has announced that Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order will be at this year’s Star Wars Celebration. This will be the first official showcase of the upcoming Respawn game, which is tentatively scheduled to launch this fall.

Star Wars Celebration is scheduled for April 11-15, and, according to The Star Wars Show, the Jedi Fallen Order reveal will occur on Saturday, April 13 during a “special panel” that will “feature a discussion of never before heard details ahead of the game’s fall 2019 release date.” Set between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, Jedi Fallen Order has you play as a Jedi Padawan who survived Order 66. We don’t know much else about Jedi Fallen Order, but there’s plenty we want from the game.

In other Star Wars game news, The Chosen One update went live in Battlefront II today, which added Anakin Skywalker as a playable Hero. Anakin represents the final major piece of the series of Clone Wars updates planned for Battlefront II, which also added Obi-Wan Kenobi, General Grievous, and Count Dooku, as well as a Geonosis multiplayer map. Certain lines of dialogue from the new characters imply that some female Heroes, like Ahsoka and Padme, might be the next stage of post-launch content for the game.

Jedi Fallen Order represents the second game by Respawn planned for 2019, following the popular Apex Legends. The free-to-play battle royale game takes place in Respawn’s Titanfall universe, specifically several decades after the events of Titanfall 2. In our Apex Legends review, Phil Hornshaw gave the game a 9/10, writing, “Apex Legends is a mix of smart shooter ideas that makes for a competitive, team-based game that gets at all the best parts of battle royale while addressing a lot of the weaknesses. Respawn’s intense focus on team play makes Apex more than just a worthy addition to the genre; it’s an indicator of where battle royale should go in the future.”

Mortal Kombat 11 Online Stress Test Coming In March Before The Beta

Mortal Kombat 11 is coming soon, but depending on your level of bloodlust, it might not be soon enough. If you just can’t wait to start snapping tendons and ripping spleens in comically over-the-top fashion, you’ll be pleased to know that you might be able to play as early as March 15-17.

That’s when NetherRealm is planning an online stress test for the game. It’s only in the US, and only on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions. Plus space will be limited and randomly selected, so you’ll have to register for a chance to enter the test.

This will put the servers through their paces before the other beta test, which will be available for PS4 and Xbox One pre-orders. That test will run from March 28-31. Pre-ordering will also net you Shao Kahn as a playable character.

The announcement came as part of the latest Kombat Kast, which also heralded the return of Johnny Cage. He plays with all the cheesy Hollywood bravado you’ve come to expect, along with some new moves like a camera flash stunner and the ability to call in a stunt double for some truly unfair double-teaming.

The regular Kombat Kast streams are slowly growing the character roster, and this time each character has a swath of cosmetic (ahem, kosmetic) options to choose from.

While both the online stress test and the pre-order beta are only available on PS4 and Xbox One, the full game will also be coming to PC and Nintendo Switch. It will hit all platforms on April 23.

Apex Legends Needs To Make This One Big Improvement Immediately

As far as online games go, the launch of Apex Legends was pretty impressive. Though from a player perspective the game came out of nowhere, launching at the same time it was announced, Apex Legends has had relatively few problems and barriers to play. While other games have seen connection issues and server troubles, for the most part, Apex Legends hasn’t had the same kind of problems that online games often experience.

There is one issue that seems to effect Apex players of all stripes, though, especially on PC. That’s the trouble of game crashes. Apex Legends will often crash mid-match, possibly because of issues with graphics or stability, possibly because of a brief loss of connectivity. Members of the Apex community have shared their troubles in forums and attempted to find fixes for the issues, but they still occur with worrying frequency.

It’s not really clear what’s causing the crashes or how to prevent them, and they’re usually pretty debilitating. There’s nothing worse than preparing for the final showdown of a match, only to lose a member of your squad to a crash and get stuck fighting at a disadvantage.

Apex’s crashes seem to be one of the biggest issues the young game is facing. Respawn Entertainment has noted that it’s working on fixes for the issues, and things seem to be a little better at this point–we’ve noticed that players who stall out in the game tend to recover more often since the last Apex Legends update, rather than just crashing and disconnecting from a match altogether. But crashes still happen relatively frequently, and they can totally wreck a game.

While Respawn searches for a fix for the crash issue, it could make one big change to Apex Legends that would help mitigate the issue, and improve the game besides: let players rejoin matches when they disconnect. It’s a feature that other shooters and battle royale games, like Overwatch and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, already include, and it makes for a serious quality-of-life improvement when something goes awry with connectivity and other issues.

Allowing players who get knocked out of games to come back would make dealing with crashes a whole lot easier, for a start, but it would also greatly improve the quality of the game for players who find themselves suffering through no fault of their own. The idea of allowing players to rejoin also feels in line with one of Respawn’s innovations in the battle royale genre. The game already allows squads to rescue players who have been eliminated, giving them a second chance at a win. Reconnecting to a game you dropped from through no fault of your own fits with that line of thinking as well.

In fact, the respawning system might be a useful workaround if Respawn finds that allowing players to rejoin the game directly creates an unfair advantage. If players can’t just jump straight back into the game as their former dead characters, Apex could allow for squads to recover their teammates’ banners–that way, disconnected players and their teams still have a chance, but they don’t necessarily get an unfair advantage over squads with solid connections.

Of course, it’d be a lot better if Respawn could figure out what’s causing the crashes and fix the issue, or let the rest of us know how we can tweak our systems to minimize the issue. But the ability to rejoin games would at least help. It’s the one thing Respawn could do immediately to make Apex Legends a lot more fun for people who take grabbing those championships seriously.

Last Chance To Grab These Free Xbox One Games With Gold For February 2019

Somehow, March is nearly upon us, which means Xbox Live’s Games With Gold are turning over once more. Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon on Xbox One and Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy on Xbox 360 will be around through tomorrow, February 28, before a new wave of games becomes available for March. Super Bomberman R on Xbox One will stick around through mid-March, so don’t panic if you haven’t downloaded that one yet. Claim Xbox Live’s current Games With Gold here.

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon is an 8-bit platformer that’s a direct homage to Castlevania 3: Dracula’s curse, and it’s a mini-game prequel to the upcoming Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night promised as part of that game’s Kickstarter campaign. You’ll start as demon slayer Zangetsu but have the ability to play as multiple other characters, each with unique skills, and multiple endings can be unlocked based on your actions. Meanwhile, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy is a freebie right now for Xbox 360. First released in 2003, this first- and third-person shooter is enjoyed by many Star Wars fans. Download both of these games before they return to normal pricing on March 1.

Super Bomberman R is an action-maze game that basically entails blowing up your friends while navigating narrow corridors and, of course, avoiding getting blown up yourself. Both local and online multiplayer modes allow for lots of hectic, bomb-throwing fun with your friends, with online mode allowing up to eight players. There’s even a story-based campaign with over 50 levels that supports two-player co-op, so there’s plenty to entertain in this colorful party game, which is free until March 15.

There’s plenty to look forward in March’s Games With Gold, which will include Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, Star Wars: Republic Commando, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

PlayStation Plus Down To Two Free PS4 Games In March, But They’re Big

PlayStation Plus is slimming down starting in March, as it’s doing away with the free PS3 and Vita games. That leaves just two PlayStation 4 games as the PS Plus freebies for the month, but they’re rather big ones. They’re also both enhanced for PlayStation Pro, if you happen to own the higher-end system.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is the 2016 revamp of the 2007 classic. Modern Warfare remains one of the most critically acclaimed shooters of all time, and helped establish the Call of Duty series as a titanic franchise for Activision. Modern Warfare Remastered was originally included with 2016’s Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, before being sold separately. We’ve heard word that the company will return to the series with this year’s installment.

The Witness is the follow-up to Braid from creator Jonathan Blow. It’s also from 2016, offering a series of interconnected puzzles that impact the world. “The Witness molds its world, puzzles, and themes into such a layered, cohesive whole that, if we look hard enough, we’ll keep finding new ways to perceive it,” said critic Mike Mahardy in GameSpot’s review.

The current PlayStation Plus games for February 2019 are still available for a little while longer. While they last, you can pick up For Honor and the first season of Hitman on PS4. The swan song for PS3 and Vita includes Divekick and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for PS3, along with Gunhouse and Rogue Aces for Vita. Divekick has cross-buy with Vita, and both Vita games have cross-buy with PS4. You can pick up all of those before March 5, at which time they’ll be replaced by Modern Warfare and The Witness, which will be available until April 1.

March’s Xbox One Games With Gold Titles Revealed

The titles offered through Xbox Live’s Games with Gold program for March have been announced. As usual, two Xbox One games are being offered–one at the start of the month and one halfway through–and two older titles from previous console generations will be free with a Gold subscription as well.

In terms of Xbox One titles, from March 1-31, you’ll be able to download Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion, an open-world adventure game based on the popular animated series Adventure Time. From March 16-April 15, a Games with Gold subscription will allow you to download Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 for free. If you haven’t played Garden Warfare 2 before, you should as this wacky shooter is an absolute blast, and doing so will possibly prepare you for the next Plants vs. Zombies game as it’s rumored to be Garden Warfare 3.

Despite the notable Xbox One offerings this month, the two older titles are the highlight of March’s Games with Gold. From March 1-15, you can download Star Wars: Republic Commando, a squad-focused first-person shooter that came out for the original Xbox. In our Star Wars: Republic Commando review, we wrote, “If you’re a fan of Star Wars or action games, Republic Commando is easy to recommend.” With Games with Gold, you can nab Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, an atypical addition to the Metal Gear franchise that abandons stealth for head-on sword-focused combat, from March 16-31. In our Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance review, we wrote, “If you’re even vaguely interested in the Metal Gear series or intelligent hack-and-slash games, do not pass up a chance to play this exciting and addictive hybrid.” Both Republic Commando and Revengeance are Xbox One backwards compatible, and X-enhanced for One X.

As with all Games with Gold titles, you must have an Xbox Live Gold online subscription in order to download these games during the dates they’re available. Several of February’s Games with Gold offerings are still live, but you’re running out of time on them.
