Ways to Speed Up a Slow Computer

1.Clean Up Your Machine

It’s not always apparent, but your computer is indeed a machine that needs certain physical care to operate properly. The biggest culprit when it comes to low performance is dust. Your computer has fans to keep it cool, and they suck that stuff up. Too much dust leads to too much heat leads to low performance. A can of compressed air (never a vacuum) is your weapon of choice. If you have a laptop (and let’s be real, you probably do), pay close attention to where you put it when you use it. Some laptops have fans that subtly vent out of the bottom or side of the case, and so placing your laptop on anything other than a hard, flat surface can block the intake or exhaust.

2. Clean Up Your Boot Process

Both Windows and macOS allow you to set some programs to automatically start up when you login. It’s handy when they are programs that you use every time you use your machine. But it’s a plague when programs you don’t want or need are booting up every time you turn on your computer.

Fortunately it is easy to remedy this by going to settings and reOn a Mac, go to System Preferences > Users and Groups > Login Items. Select any you don’t need running all the time and knock them off the list. The equivalent dialogue in Windows is called “Startup” and lives in the Task Manager.

3. Clean Up Your Hard Drive

Over time, you accumulate a lot of applications and files you no longer use. It’s wise to occasionally take a moment to prune the main folders on your computer. Don’t forget to check the downloads folder—it fills up faster than you’d imagine, and the files there can be quite large. Also make sure to empty the Trash/Recycling Bin. But here’s the thing: Even if you do that, there are plenty of other files you don’t use that you can’t really keep track of—either because over time even the most fastidious person loses track of where they’ve saved everything, or because your computer squirrels away a lot of temporary files in places you can’t or don’t look at.

So your best bet is to get an app. For Mac, CleanMyMac is the leader for Apple computers. It costs $40/year, but you can get a free trial from its website. Newer versions of Windows have pretty good utilities for this built in. Storage Sense is an automated tool that lets Windows manage things for you; Disk Cleanup gives you a bit more control. Both are very, very useful.

What about Huawei ?

Chinese telecoms giant Huawei has been the focus of international scrutiny, with several countries raising security concerns about its products.
Then on 1 December, the company’s chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, was arrested in Canada. At a court hearing in Vancouver on 7 December it was revealed that she was wanted in the US on fraud charges relating to the alleged breaking of US sanctions on Iran.
It has also been reported that Japan’s government will stop buying equipment from Huawei, and rival Chinese manufacturer ZTE.

What are countries worried about?

There are fears that China is using Huawei as a proxy so it can spy on rival nations and scoop up useful information. Huawei has said it is independent and gives nothing to the country’s government, apart from relevant taxes.
Critics question how free any major Chinese business can be from Beijing’s influence. They point out that its media-shy founder, Ren Zhengfei, was a former engineer in the country’s army and joined the Communist Party in 1978.
Huawei is keen to portray itself as a private company owned by its employees with no ties to the Chinese government beyond those of a law-abiding taxpayer.

It can also lay claim to being one of the biggest spenders on research and development. It invested more than $13.2bn (£10.3bn) in 2017 and has said the figure will be even higher for 2018.
But critics fear that the Chinese government could order the firm to modify its devices to help hack attacks, eavesdrop on conversations or gain high-level access to sensitive networks.
There are questions about whether China would allow a technology firm that has been deeply embedded in rival nations’ infrastructure to remain independent. Huawei is now the second biggest smartphone-maker in the world.

Which countries have taken action?

  • In November, New Zealand barred Huawei from supplying a local mobile network with 5G equipment
  • The US and Australia had already closed the door on Huawei’s involvement in their next-generation mobile networks
  • Canada is carrying out a security review of Huawei’s products
  • UK service provider BT is removing Huawei kit from the core of its 5G network
  • On 7 December, the EU‘s technology commissioner Andrus Ansip said countries “have to be worried” about Chinese manufacturers
  • But the interior ministry of Germany says it opposes banning any suppliers from its 5G networks
The UK has not enacted a ban on the use of Huawei equipment. However, the firm’s products are regularly subjected to security testing by the UK’s GCHQ intelligence agency.
The co-operative agreement between the UK and Huawei includes a facility nicknamed the Cell in Banbury, Oxfordshire. There, staff employed by Huawei but answering to GCHQ look for security flaws in the company’s products.

Google launches a Rs 500 JioPhone competitor called WizPhone WP006

Google launches a Rs 500 JioPhone competitor called WizPhone WP006
Looks like Google is now getting into the feature phone market. Or rather the market for a feature phone but with some smart functionality. The company has launched a new phone, which has a rather weird name, called the WizPhone WP006. This new Google phone looks like a feature phone, similar to how JioPhone looks, but comes with 7KaiOS and some smart functionality including Google Assistant that can be given voice commands.
Now, if you think that the WizPhone WP006 is too similar to the JioPhone, you are right. It does look like, and probably works like, the JioPhone. It is powered by the same KaiOS that also powers the JioPhone and the JioPhone 2. And just like the JioPhone, the WizPhone WP006 also supports apps like WhatsApp that have been made specifically for KaiOS.
For now, Google has launched the WizPhone WP006 only in Indonesia. But it surely looks like a pretty big deal because one of the senior Google executives, Scott Huffman, launched the phone at the company’s GoogleForIndonesia event. The WizPhone WP006 has been priced at IDR 99,000, which roughly translates to around Rs 490 in Indian currency. In other words, the WizPhone WP006 is a $7 phone.
The WizPhone WP006 is a feature phone but with some smart functionality built into it. Just like the JioPhone, the WizPhone WP006 supports 4G connectivity. it also comes with special version of WhatsApp installed on it, and its users will be able to summon Google Assistant on WizPhone WP006 with voice commands.
But if Google indeed brings something the WizPhone WP006 to India, that will give tough competition to the JioPhone. While largely people prefer to buy a smartphone nowadays, many people in India can only afford a cheap feature phone, or may require a secondary phone for calls etc. For these people a phone like the WizPhone WP006 that costs Rs 5000 from Google will surely be a viable purchase.
